Mom and Shogun |
I
would like to tell you about a very special lady - my Mom. After living in Florida
for years, she decided to come live with me and my dogs. At the time I had two
Border Collies I was showing. She went with me to several shows and decided she
wanted a dog of her own. Many years ago she had owned an Eskie until it was stolen,
but she always had a soft spot for that particular breed. We needed a very gentle
dog for a 91 year old lady! I wrote to the Eskie club in Atlanta about any rescues
they might have, and they sent me a copy of their newsletter. Patrea Pabst had
placed an ad for an abused six year old UKC Champion who was looking for a home. It
took six months before we finally got to see him. Several weeks later we finally
brought him home. He had the sweetest eyes, but he also had big red spots all over
his l/4 inch long coat. My Mom and I saw more in those eyes than sweetness, we saw a
plea for help! He had been in five different homes since his birth. His last
was in Florida where he was found literally eaten up by fleas and covered with hot spots.
And now for the happy
ending.... Since coming to live with us Shogun finished his AKC Championship and has also
been awarded the title of UKC Grand Champion. He has earned a Therapy Dog title, the
AKC Canine Good Citizen Award, an ARBA Championship, and has won several Best of Breed
competitions throughout the southeast. All of this has been accomplished during his
short 1 1/2 years with us.
Sadly, my Mom died at the end of June, but
her many visits with Shogun to senior citizens at nursing homes will be remembered by many
of the residents. Even during her last days at the hospital, she would take Shogun
to visit people on her floor, with special permission of course. Everyone loves this
sweet dog. I have yet to find even one bad habit that this wonderful companion and
friend has. Bertha Bullock and Shogun proved that RESCUE DOES WORK, and to
EVERYONE'S benefit. What wonderful memories I have of this past year. I will
treasure them, and my true friend who still brings me comfort.
